CrossFit Kids is a method for teaching Greg Glassman’s CrossFit to children. Based on the principal of mechanics, consistency and intensity, CrossFit Kids emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescents. Exercise is beneficial to cognitive function which means that regular exercise can positively impact a child’s academic achievement.
CrossFit Kids is programmed for FUN! Broad, inclusive and general fun! Your kids will WANT to attend! We teach them to love being active! We talk about creating healthy habits, we talk about why its important to be active and we talk about nutrition. Our hope is to instill a love of fitness that will endure into adulthood.
The needs of second graders and high school varsity wrestlers differ by degree…not by kind. The program is scalable for any age or experience level and accounts for a variety of maturity levels that can be present within a group of kids. CrossFit Kids is designed to be minimalistic so that it doesn’t require a lot of complicated equipment.
Is lifting weights safe for children?
Yes. When properly supervised it is safe and good for them. Studies show that lifting weights has no negative effect on kids. However, children’s bodies don’t grow from lifting weights the way adults bodies do either. Therefore, in general, with our younger athletes, we prefer to stick to getting their form and movement perfected before adding weight. We begin introducing light weight at about age 10. My teen does sports at school. Will adding CrossFit be too much? Should he/she wait until after their sport ends to start CrossFit Teens?
It is recommended that kids maintain CrossFit during their sport season. Just be sure to talk to us so that we are careful with his/her programming.
My kid doesn’t want to exercise so I want you to MAKE them!
First, adults should lead by example. Second, neither you or us, or any other coach or person can make your child love physical activity. They have to understand the benefit of exercise and then realize how that affects them. We do our best to teach about the health benefits of fitness and how their lives can improve by getting up and moving! However our policy is that if a kid doesn’t feel like working out for some reason, and we can’t motivate them to participate that day, we will encourage them to stay and help us out. Your job, as a parent, is to get them to the Box regularly and on time! We will take it from there. Sometimes kids have bad days too and we want YCF to be a place they feel happy, fun and positive. We encourage good attitudes, healthy play and a fun atmosphere!
My kid needs to go on diet…can you tell him that?
No. He. Does. Not. And No. We will not tell him that.
He needs YOU to purchase healthy, whole, real food. At YCF, we don’t encourage dieting at all. We encourage parents to make good choices when purchasing groceries and to lead by example. We believe that it’s the parent’s obligation to provide the best choices for their kids. Here is our take (crossfitkids.com):
Sane Nutrition for Kids in 150 Words
Our goal with kids isn’t to get them on the Zone or strict Paleo, but to get them to think and make good choices about what they eat. Our goal is to teach them the very basic concepts: Sugar is bad, protein is good and you need to eat some at every meal. Nuts and seeds are good fats. Eat them, don’t avoid them. Pasta, bread and rice are not that good for you. Stuff that is yellow, red and green and found in the fruit and vegetable isle are good for you…eat a lot of it.
Look at your plate, make a fist: eat that much protein at each meal. Turn your hand over and fill it with nuts and seeds: eat that much good fat. Fill the rest of your plate with the stuff you found in the fruit and veggie aisle. Fill your plate this way at every meal and don’t eat much more.
Our goal is to have children and their parents make the best food choices they can. Our hope is that real whole foods will replace processed, fake, sugar, chemically enhanced food.
Our classes are led by an experienced CF Trainer, also:
- a CrossFit L1 Trainer who is also a CrossFit Kids Trainer
and has an annual criminal background check
- this is personal training in small group setting
- FUN! We make it fun so they WANT to come!
- motivating, positive atmosphere
- physical fitness beyond what any gym class can accomplish
- mental fortitude…strong bodies, strong minds
All Kids will be required to complete our Kids Foundations class at 4pm on MWF by appointment, to learn the basics. Coach J will advance them into the appropriate class when they are ready and meet the requirements, much like a belt system in martial arts.
