Athlete Spotlight

Each month we pick one of our athletes to Spotlight. We have so many athletes who have great  stories about how they started CrossFit and YCF! When choosing who we will spotlight, we take into consideration the following:
Who is consistently setting, sharing and accomplishing their goals?
Who hasn't given up on their goals, however big or small? We like to hear 'I can! I will!'
Who is being a team player by encouraging their fellow athletes to finish strong?
Who really makes an effort to meet new athletes and make them feel welcome?
Who is motivating others by setting a good example and having a strong mental tenacity during workouts?
We also take into consideration positive attitude, courage under fire and regular attendance.

Here is what doesn't matter to us:
Being able to lift 1000 lbs.
Always finishing first.
Finishing every workout at the expense of proper form.
The best workout outfit.

Decembers Athlete SpotLight goes to CASSIE SPRINGER!!!!! Cassie was our Spotlighted athlete a few months ago but with the baby coming Cassie was so busy so she never got a chance to fill out the interview! So hee it is now!! Congrats Cassie!!!

What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?

I was initially working out at Crossfit Plainfield but had to change gyms due to our move.  When I found out that Jeanette and Mark were opening a gym, I was so excited.  I have known Jeanette for most of my life and knew that their gym was going to be my new crossfit family!

What's your fitness background?

I have worked out on and off most of my adult life but never as consistent as I do now.

Occupation?

I am a mom but in my spare time I am an RN.  I also have an organic produce delivery service.

Tell us about your family life...

I am a mom of two amazing little guys, Easton (3) and Graden (2 months). I also have a pretty amazing husband Jeff who also crossfits with me.

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?

Strength doesn't come from what you can do.  It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't.

What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville CrossFit?

I love the people that I work out with and our coaches!  It's like having a second little family!

How has CrossFit changed your life?

I have a heart condition that I developed when I was pregnant with Easton.  My CrossFit addiction helps keep my body and heart healthy and strong.

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?

Doing a pull up has to be my most exciting accomplishment so far.  I am also excited that I have been lifting way heavier in the past 8 weeks since having Graeden. I really think all those squats I did while I was pregnant really paid off!

Future training goals?

I would like to do a competition at some point!  A bunch of our fellow CF's did one last winter around the time I found out I was pregnant and I was kinda jealous watching them.  Once I am ready I'm sure I will be bugging a bunch of you to do one with me!!!!

What's your daily nutrition like?

I try to eat gluten-free as much as possible.  Like Jeanette and Mark say, everything in moderation.

Favorite cheat meal?
PIZZA & CHOCOLATE

Tell us something we don't know about you!

I love the outdoors!  I wish I lived in a state where I could hike, camp, and mountain bike all of the time!

What have you learned about yourself from doing CrossFit?

I can do so many things that I never thought I was capable off.  I have learned to push myself even though it may be uncomfortable.

What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?

Anything with weights!  Cleans, snatches, deadlifts, ect!

How did you feel after your first workout?

Horrible!  I was so sore and could hardly walk but for some reason kept coming back for more!  Now I am completely addicted!

Why don't you go to a globo gym...it's a lot cheaper?

Mostly because I hate working out alone!  Also because cardio machines are boring and I find it to be a little uncomfortable lifting weights along side big meat heads!

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?

Never give up!  It doesn't matter how fast you are or if you are the last one done, no one will judge.  We are a team and are there to motivate and encourage each other!

It's not about how fast or how far you have to go.  It's about digging deep and pushing yourself to keep moving forward!

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT FOR SEPTEMBER IS: MALLORY GIBSON

What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?
I joined Yorkville Crossfit to try something new; I never felt good about how I looked compared to most people at school.

What's your fitness background?
When I started Crossfit I would go with my mom to a different Crossfit box, then branched out into Yorkville Crossfit. I had never would work as hard as I do when I would be by myself working out.

Occupation?
Junior at Yorkville High School

Tell us about your family life...
In my family consists of two younger siblings, Morgan and Garrett, and my parents Patty and Jim. We have moved around a lot in the past and it would be hard for me because of having to start a new school and try to make new friends, and it doesn't always help when I'm really shy around new people. I'm always challenging myself to talk to new people. My family and I grew up in Texas then about 10 years later moved to Wisconsin, then 2 years later moved here to Illinois and have been here every since.

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?
'Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!' -Audrey Hepburn

What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville CrossFit?
My favorite part would have to be being able to go with my mom and workout and cheering others on, and going along with cheering people on, going to the gym, not dressed to workout, and supporting all the others that are doing the WOD.

How has CrossFit changed your life?
Crossfit has changed my life a lot. I'm feeling more confident, not just about how I look, but how I feel about myself. Just knowing that I'm good at something, other then sitting around the house all day, makes me proud of myself.

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?
I think I have accomplished a lot from doing Crossfit for a while now. When I have an opportunity to do a challenge I take it just to see how I do, and that's an achievement that I have accomplished for myself. The results I get from the end of the challenge shock me at first but then I feel determined to continue with doing my best, giving everything I've got, and I think that's a result that have been accomplished.

Future training goals?
In the future my goals would mostly be what they are now, which is doing my best, tying my hardest, and to never quit. As I get older and stronger those will never change for me; I think a while down the road that I want to be in the Crossfit games just to see where I get and know what I should continue to work on throughout the years of doing Crossfit.

What's your daily nutrition like?
My daily nutrition isn't like how it should be. I do try my best to eat right, eating salads every now and then, and eating fruits and veggies, getting enough protein, but sometimes it never goes as it should be and that's something that I'm still working on. For example, in the morning I would eat a bagel with low fat cream cheese, then for lunch I'll have a turkey sandwich with mayo, apples and peanut butter and a soda, then come home eat a snack, could be a bagel, then dinner comes around and I'll have something with chicken. That is mostly how my daily nutrition is like.

Favorite cheat meal?
Just having junk food in general.

Tell us something we don't know about you!
I put everyone else first then school then myself. I like to have my family and friends know that I will drop everything for them and still get all my school work that is needed done then I come last.

What have you learned about yourself from doing CrossFit?
I've learned that I can do anything as long as I try my best.

What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?
I like to handstands in a WOD.

How did you feel after your first workout?
I did feel like I was going to die but I didn't. I pushed through it and I liked it and did like to continue going to workout.

Why don't you go to a globo gym...it's a lot cheaper?
I like having Jeannette and Mark coaching and being able to be with other people working out at the same time instead of going to a gym and do your own thing.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?
Advice that I have for someone new is to just do it! Do your first workout with everything you've got and if you don't like it, you don't like it. No one is forcing you to do something you don't like. Some of the WOD's are brutal, but that's what Crossfit is, it will kick your butt and you have to kick it back by not quitting and continue going even if your not that strong you will be you have to believe in yourself that Crossfit won't bring you down.

Congratulations to Bob Pankala, our AOM for August 2014!

What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?
After doing a few rounds of P90x and Insanity combined with running I was looking for something to take me to the next level. Our local run club (RunJunkeEs) set up an introductory session at Yorkville Crossfit and a 5 minute workout totally kicked my ass, it was love at first sight after that…!

What's your fitness background?
I played Basketball and Soccer in High school. After that I maintained a very moderate fitness level at best. Then in early 2012 my wife and I started doing P90x, after completing 2 rounds of that we did a couple of rounds of Insanity and started running on our off days. My first year running I completed a 5k, 10k and half marathon. Then Oct. 2013 we stated going to Yorkville Crossfit and have not looked back.

Occupation?
State Inspector- Those little Dept. of Agriculture / Weights & Measures decals you see on the gas pumps and scales at grocery stores and other places are me ;)

Tell us about your family life...
I’ve been married for 18 years to my lovely wife and we are currently anxiously awaiting the arrival of our twin boys!

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always be where you are right now.

What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville CrossFit?
The people and atmosphere without question. From the coaches to athletes I’ve yet to meet a better group of people.

How has CrossFit changed your life?
It’s given me more energy and endurance in everything I do. It has made me more disciplined and has taught me the importance of not letting my mind talk my body out of doing OR trying to do something! It’s also exposed every single weakness I have, many of which I never knew I had! If you think you’re a bad ass try CrossFit and get back to me… If you’re not humbled by your weaknesses you’re either a douche or an actual bad ass...

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?
I’ve never been stronger or more fit in my life. My goal was by this birthday to be in the best shape of my life. I can now cross that off the list :)

Future training goals?
Continue to work on my strength and endurance and hit new PR’s every month. I’d like to do some competitions next year AFTER Im able to lift more that a 45 bar in my Overhead Squat!

What's your daily nutrition like?
Right now it’s complex since I’m actually trying to put on some weight / mass while trying to deflate this pasty white belly. But normally I have a what I’ll call decent concept of what I put in my body every day. I have a Calorie range I try to keep near and I’ve cut back on a lot of so called bad foods and try to eat as clean as possible. BUT, after this weight gain plan is done it’s time to get real serious and finally match the diet with the level of exercise. I’m so freaking tired of the 6 pack ab store telling me my abs are on backorder!!

Favorite cheat meal?
I can literally turn Ice Cream into a full meal, so let’s go with that. And kindly place a warn brownie under my Ice Cream; thank you.

Tell us something we don't know about you!
In high school I was once was paid by a stranger to teach their kid how to moon walk for a commercial.

What have you learned about yourself from doing CrossFit?
I wasn’t as strong physically as I thought I was but at times I’m stronger mentally that I thought I was.

What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?
Toss up between wall balls and Tuck Jumps. I hate them but I love them...

How did you feel after your first workout?
One word answer: COUGHY (is that a real word? if it’s not it should be because I was coughing my ass off).

Why don't you go to a globo gym...it's a lot cheaper?
I’d rather do actual real workouts. When you go to CrossFit the workouts are varied, they are set up for you so you can’t favor any one area, and you are doing the workouts with a group of kick ass people. All of those reasons make your workout(s) better, not to mention the coaching you get. Oh, and the people around me generally look as miserable as I do (that’s a good thing).

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?
To quit thinking about it and actually try it out. We thought about it for months and I never knew what I was missing out on until I actually tried it. Don’t give up on it without giving it a chance, so try more than just one workout. If you see something on the board that looks to intimating or simply is not physically possible try to scale it down to a hard but physically doable level. Start small if you need to and work your way up, that is just one of the wonderful things about CrossFit. You can scale it to a level that allows you to do it. And never feel silly asking somebody or going to Google to search for terms like WOD, or Thruster… We all did it ;)

Congratulations to our AOM for July, AMY TAYLOR! Here is Amy's interview:

First of all, I just wanted to say that without YCF's AMAZING coaches, I would still be in the same spot as I was with no results! It's becuase of Jeanette, Mark, and Levi that I've had the courage to push myself farther. And then they come along and push me even further out of my comfort zone and now I'm seeing results! It's so addicting and I can't wait for what's to come!

1. What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?
I liked the sense of community and support YCF offered and of course, the results!

 2. What's your fitness background?
Not much! I played volleyball in high school, but that was 8 years ago :/

 3. Occupation?
Accountant! I'm so lucky to be able to sit on my butt all day, every day... Not!

 4. Tell us about your family life...
I have a big family with lots of little ones so we try to stay active when the weather is nice. Cooking out and spending time outside have been most of the summer so far.

 6. What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville CrossFit?
I love the support everyone gives! It's because of everyone pushing me just that one extra step that's gotten me as far as I have ;)

 7. How has CrossFit changed your life?
It's gotten me addicted to being healthy, and a different mindset on my body. I don't care how I look anymore, I care about what I can do :)

 8. What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?
Well, pull ups aren't too far away! (I never thought I'd say that) and I can do TTB, and my max weights keep increasing!

 9. Future training goals?
My biggest goal right now is hand stands. I'm absolutely terrible at them and I know it's going to be a lot of work, but I want to be able to do it!

 10. What's your daily nutrition like?
Lots and lots of veggies! I give myself a heat day once a week where I can eat and drink anything I want, but man if I overdo it I can feel it the next day at the box.

 11. Favorite cheat meal?
Anything pasta! I love (and miss) pasta so much!

 12. Tell us something we don't know about you!
I've played the piano for 10 years :)

 13. What have you learned about yourself from doing CrossFit?
That I can do more than I thought!

 14. What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?
I like doing dead lifts, anything abs, and double unders

 15. How did you feel after your first workout?
I thought I was going to pass out and die

16. Why don't you go to a globo gym...it's a lot cheaper?
Because I never saw results. I wanted to make fitness a lifestyle and YCF gives me that :)

17. What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?
Definitely try it! It's a little intimidating at first but we have all been there at the start :) you'll love the results and you'll make a lots of new friends too!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MAY's AOM, JUSTIN GIFFORD!!
What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?

The main reason I joined YCF is to get into shape for my wedding.

> What's your fitness background?

I lifted competitively, wrestled, and played football in highschool.  I worked out 3-4 times a week during college. It was your typical gym workout: do 5 reps, look at yourself in the mirror, and then talk to your boys for 5 mins, and repeat.

> Occupation?
Financial Analyst

> Tell us about your family life...

I have a beautiful fiance and a four legged daughter named Judy.

> What's your favorite quote or words to live by?

Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left over by those who hustle.

> What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville
CrossFit?

The culture is my favorite part about working out at YCF.  Mark and Jeannette have done a great job of building a community of athletes who are down to earth, encouraging, and passionate about living a healthy lifestyle.

> How has CrossFit changed your life?

The obvious answer is YCF has allowed me to achieve a level of fitness I have not experienced since highschool.  But, it has transformed other areas of my life such as increased mental toughness, built relationships with some awesome people, and gave me a platform to express my competitive nature.

> What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?

I recently placed second in the Amplify Open.

> Future training goals?

I want to compete in the open and make it to regionals.

> What's your daily nutrition like?

Honestly, not good. I try to eat healthy, but I need to step up my game. However, I don't eat fast food or drink pop.

I like to say I am on the seafood diet. I see food and I eat it.

> Favorite cheat meal?

More like cheat meals...I am a sucker for pizza, beer, and custard.

> Tell us something we don't know about you!

I owned and operated a wedding DJ company in college.

> What have you learned about yourself from doing CrossFit?

I can push myself beyond limits I never thought were possible. This mentality has transferred over to my personal and professional life as well.  WODS have taught me how to approach situations in life with a 'can do' attitude. Push harder when your mind says stop!

> What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?

Anything but double unders!

> How did you feel after your first workout?

Exhausted but exhilarated!

> Why don't you go to a globo gym...it's a lot cheaper?

I don't go to global gyms for several reasons.

1. Not a competitive atmosphere. Crossfit provides a structure that measures your time, weight, and intensity. In addition, it allows you to measure your results to people from all over the world.  It is like training for a sport.

2. Return on Time. You will not find a more intense, ass kicking, or exhilarating workout all within 60 minutes at a globo gym.

3. Coaches. I like having someone else plan my workouts. It allows me to work on my weaknesses and not get stuck in a rut.

> What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?

For individuals who are thinking about it, just do it! If you want to get ripped and have fun doing it then YCF is for you. If not, then just stick to your treadmill!

Listed below is some advice for new people.

1. Commit to six months. It takes a 1-2 months for you to learn the basic movements, but in reality you never stop learning (triple unders?? Yeah..)

2. Take rest days. Do not be afraid to take rest days. In the beginning your body needs time to recover, train smart. Stretch during your rest days or go for a light jog.

3. Don't give up on yourself. You have to learn how to turn that voice off inside your head that is telling you to stop. Once you learn how to shut that voice up, then it will do wonders in other areas of your life.

4. Don't compare yourself to others just focus on you and the movements.

5. Listen to your body. Don't be afraid to scale. Know the difference between sore pain and injury pain. Ask people at the box if you don't know the difference!

6. Get excited! You are about to be in the best shape of your life.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JEFF TALLEY...AOM FOR APRIL!!
What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?

I used to workout pretty regularly, then kids came along. I basically put exercise on hold. A physical revealed elevated cholesterol levels and higher than normal blood pressure got me thinking that I need to take care of myself. Dan Woods suggested that I come in and check out YCF.   Boy am I glad I did!

What's your fitness background?

I've lifted weights growing up and even went to another box back in 2009 where I participated in    Crossfit boot camp. Most of my weight lifting was more for power than anything else.

Occupation?

Police officer

Tell us about your family life...

I'm happily married with three kids and a dog.

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?

'Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.'  This is a quote by Henry David Thoreau

A more sinister one is 'Trample the weak and hurdle the dead!'

What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville CrossFit?

The camaraderie and the challenges of each WOD.  Mark, Levi and Jeanette know how to motivate and push me when I'm struggling.  I also like that I don't have to think about what workout I'm going to do like at a globo gym. I have Mark, Levi and Jeanette to drum up a brutal WOD!

How has CrossFit changed your life?

I have more energy and motivation now than I've had in years!  People have complimented me on my weight loss and  I can see the changes in my body.  It's been nothing but a positive experience so far.

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?

We'll I haven't been able to do a pull up since I was in the police academy. I can get a couple of them now!  And just this past Friday I got 2 TTB's. Pretty proud moment!  I'm also very proud of my PR's and how I've seen them go up in the last few months.

Future training goals?

I want to keep bettering myself in every aspect of Crossfit. I have so many goats it's not even funny.   The rope climb and double unders are probably at the top of my list of things I want to master.

What's your daily nutrition like?

I try to eat clean for the most part.  A lot of animal protein and fruits and vegetables. I enjoy finding paleo recipes and giving them a try.

Favorite cheat meal?

Wow, I have a few. I'd have to say Mexican food like a good carne asada with home made tortillas along with chips and salsa and plenty of beer!

Tell us something we don't know about you!

I love to fly fish and I tie my own flies.

What have you learned about yourself from doing CrossFit?

That I can push my body harder than I ever have before, and it's going to respond. The battle is all mental.

What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?

I'm starting to become a big fan of cleans.

How did you feel after your first workout?

I felt absolutely horrible, I basically wanted to curl up and die.

Why don't you go to a globo gym...it's a lot cheaper?

There's no sense of belonging at a globo gym. Here, it's like a huge extended family!

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?

There's no time like now. Crossfit is a physical and mental challenge
with great rewards. Listen to the coaches and don't be afraid to ask questions. Most of all push yourself  to new levels and have fun!  One last thing, you're not in this alone, everyone around you is going through the same workout and will be there for you if you need it!

CONGRATULATIONS TO SHAY WARD...ATHLETE OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH!!!

What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?

I had totally lost my motivation in going to the gym and had put on a few pounds so when Mark and Jeanette started the gym in their garage, I joined to support them and to see what Crossfit was all about and I felt like I needed a change in my fitness routine. I had never watched a Crossfit video or knew what any of the lingo meant. Honestly, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into before I joined.
What's your fitness background?

Up until 5 years ago, I had NO fitness background. I didn't play sports in school. I had never had been to a gym. I never considered myself athletic and always felt uncoordinated.  After having my last baby I made a conscious effort to eat healthy and exercise. At first, I used the Weight Watchers Points system and started walking, then running. Later, I got up the nerve to join a gym. I've lost (and kept off) about 60 pounds since then!

Occupation? I work nights as a Telemetry nurse at Presence Mercy Hospital in Aurora.

Tell us about your family life...

I'm a divorced mom. I have 4 kids. Parker 13yrs, Miles 11yrs, Ellie 8 yrs and Mia 6yrs.  My daughter, Ellie, was born with complex congenital heart defects complicated by several strokes so she has many special needs and requires a lot of extra attention. We also have two adorable cats :)

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?

I LOVE quotes!  I used to fill notebooks as I collected them...but lately this one stands out. 'Strength doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't.'

What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville CrossFit?

First, and foremost, I love the coaches. I would've never been brave enough to even try Crossfit if it wasn't for them. Their support, encouragement and patience during those first few months when I was constantly doubting myself and my abilities (or lack of) were essential to my sticking with it. I swear they were constantly talking me off the ledge. I love the camaraderie and friendly atmosphere that all the athletes here are committed to maintaining. I love that its competitive but yet we cheer each other on and celebrate each others accomplishments. I love walking in scared and walking out feeling accomplished. I love that even though I am usually last to finish and using the lightest weight on the board, the people that are already done aren't tapping their toes, watching the clock and rolling their eyes at me...rather they are down there on the mat, cheering me on and giving me high-fives as I finish.

How has CrossFit changed your life?

I think the biggest change and beneft is that it gives my life balance, it's a healthy way to de-stress and it's something I do for myself. I think being a nurse and a single mom that I spend a lot of time and energy taking care of other people...being committed to Crossfit 3-4 days a week is something that I do to take care of ME and that gives back in positive ways to the people in my life.

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?

When I started in June, I knew NOTHING about weight lifting so learning the proper form and technique for lifts has been big for me. Six months ago, I couldn't squat to depth or even clean the bar so to be able to add weight and add my name to the PR board has been exciting to me. Just this week, I finally worked my way up to 20 inch box jumps in a WOD for the first time.

Future training goals?

Geez, this could be a long list because I feel like I still have a long way to go but  I would love to be able to do double unders and pull-ups. I would like to be able to add weight to lifts and cut down my time too.

What's your daily nutrition like?

About a year ago, I went to a low-carb diet which was HUGE for me because I am a total sugar-aholic and giving up bread and all the 'whites' like potatoes, sugar, flour and rice was definitely challenging in the beginning but after sticking with it I could tell how much better I felt and it became a life-style not a diet. In January, I did my first Paleo challenge which isn't too far off from the low-carb diet so I've made the switch pretty easily except for my Crystal Light tea/lemonade combo and Gorgonzola cheese on my salads :)

Favorite cheat meal?  Pizza or Portillos ... and I really do miss regular Coke

Tell us something we don't know about you!

I recently graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. I've applied to two grad schools for their Master's degree programs to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I hoping to start back to school again in the Fall.

What have you learned about yourself from doing CrossFit?

I think it has made me not only physically stronger but mentally stronger as well. More than I ever thought I was. I like to come in here to see what I am made of, to suffer a bit, to push myself beyond 'I Can't.' I've  learned to embrace the suck and know that I can and will get through things that are hard, whether it be a tough WOD or a rough day. I have been on the verge of tears and fatigue towards the end of a WOD and I've learned to listen to that little quiet voice that says 'Yes, you can!  You can do anything for 5 more minutes!'
Oh, wait, that's just Coach J!!! lol :)

What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?

I like the challenge of all the different lifts, slam balls, KB swing/snatches and I LOVE Crossfit Poker. And just for the record...I HATE Junkyard Dog

How did you feel after your first workout?

Breathless. Dizzy. Coughing. Fatigued after a WOD that lasted less than 10 mins. It was a big reality check as to how out of shape I really was. I had been going to a gym for a few years but nothing would have prepared me for Crossfit.

Why don't you go to a globo gym...it's a lot cheaper?

Weight machines and treadmills are just boring and personal trainers are too expensive. At YCF, there is a community of people holding me accountable to show up and a positive energy that they all bring to the Box. Everyone walks in ready to give 100% not only to their own workouts but as support as well. Personally, I also need the coaches' encouragement to make me do the hard stuff and to be constantly challenged and motivated towards my goals. I also know that my fellow athletes and/or coaches are always available via phone/email/Facebook if I have a question, problem, concern or just need to vent...and that's priceless and something you just can't get that at a Globo-gym.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?

The atmosphere at YCF is so warm, inviting and non-threatening that its a great place to start Crossfit with coaches that have just the right balance of caring and kick-your-ass attitude. For the person thinking about joining, I would say just do it! No excuses!  You'll never know what you're made of until you try it. You don't need to get into shape before joining or be in great shape to join...Crossfit can be scaled to every level of fitness. To the Newbie, I would say not to give up, the beginning is always the hardest and we've all been there. Be assured that we'll be there to cheer you on and celebrate your triumphs with you. So true.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY, EVELIN HERNANDEZ!!!! Evelin is such a sweetie so it's even more fitting that she is our AOM for this month! Here is her interview:

What was your reason for joining Yorkville Crossfit?

I had considered joining a crossfit gym for two years but never felt it was the right time due to injuries I had received while participating in other sports related activities. I thought I wasn't strong enough or ready for Crossfit.  Then when I tried out  YC, the owners were so encouraging and motivating. When I observed other females completing WODS and noted that exercises were modifed and scaled for different fitness levels and injuries,  I thought to myself, ' I think I can do this with their help.'  It didn't take long for me to decide to join Yorkville Crossfit.

What is your fitness background?

I ran and jogged while in my twenties and tried different sports activites such as rock climbing and air aerobics, aerobic exercises on a trampoline, but stopped due to injuries. I have also tried yoga type exercises.

Occupation?

I am a school psychologist for West Aurora School District 129.

Tell us about your family life?

I moved to Illinois from New York City in 2006. My family lives in NYC and Mexico and I visit them whenever I get the opportunity. I live with a roommate and my four year old goldendoodle, Cooper.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

Never give up!

What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville Crossfit?

I'm usually full of nervous energy when I arrive to  YC but once I enter the door and see  the coaches' and athletes' smiling faces, I usually relax. I love the support and encouragement I receive from everyone the moment I enter the door to the moment I leave. It's such an awesome feeling to be surrounded by such positive energy.

How has Crossfit changed your life?

Wow, how has Crossfit not changed my life?!  When I moved to Illinois, I gained 60 pounds.   Three years ago, I lost a large portion of it but have struggled to lose the last 15 pounds.  I gave up losing it until I started YC. I believe I can and I will.  I believe in myself now more than ever.  Also, the  mental stamina, and endurance, attention and focus required to complete the WODS, has seemed to transfer over to other areas of my life as well.   Since adopting the Paleo diet, encouraged by YC,  I've also learned how to cook! My momma would be so proud of me!  I see the importance of meal planning and love how I have control of everything that goes into my body. I suddenly don't like eating out anymore, which is a good thing for my body and my pockets. :-)

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?

I believe I've lost some weight and inches but I have not weighed myself since the weight loss challenge commenced.  I've received compliments from people who know I've started attending YC. According to them, the physical changes are noticable.  However, what I can tell you is that I'm definitely stronger as I can lift more weight since I started and I have developed more physical stamina and endurance as well.

Future training goals?

I would love to be able to lift more weight and I would like to participate in activities such as Mudderella, at some point.

What is your daily nutrition like?
I follow a Paleo diet with lean meats, vegetables, fruits and healthy fats.  I have dietary restrictions/ sensitivities, such as lactose  and gluten intolerances which makes the Paleo diet an excellent choice for me. Since switching over to this diet, I don't ever feel hungry. Also with the combination of crossfit and Paleo diet, I've noticed muscle definition in my arms and legs.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

I love red velvet cake!  I also like to indulge in bananas slathered with almond butter. Yummy!

Tell us something we don't know about you?

I'm the youngest of nine children and I'm a leftie.

What have you learned about youself from doing crossfit?

I've learned that I'm a badass chick!

Seriously, I've learned that I am capable of completing physically demanding workouts with drive and determination. That limits I place on myself are all in my head.

What is your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?

I love Crossfit Poker!

How did you feel after your first workout?

After my first workout, I felt extremely exhausted but also challenged and was ready for more!

Why don't you go to a globo gym? It's cheaper.

I don't attend a globo gym because I find the workouts boring. I also don't feel the camaraderie and postive energy that I get at YC.

What advice for someone who is thinking about trying out YC or someone new.

There isn't a better place for you to be than YC if you want to challenge yourself mentally and physically .  The coaches are great. They are supportive, encouraging, and very knowledgable.  They will guide you through the exercises and form and technique are never sacrificed for speed.  Correct form and technique are emphasized and corrections are made when needed reducing  your chances for injuries. The coaches will also modify and scale the exercises and will encourage you to go to the next level when yo are ready. You are definitely in good hands!

Because I would sit on a weight machine, daze off in la la land, and then go home! I need motivation and a team around me!

Be ready for the best addiction you could have in life!

Here is our interview with her!

1.  What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?

I was taking a few months off from my old CrossFit gym due to a shoulder injury, when I heard that Mark and Jeanette started a gym in their garage.  I had worked out with Mark and Jeanette at the other gym and remembered a few tips Mark had given me that helped me reach a PR in bench press, so I already knew they'd be a great coaches.  Plus, S2 (AKA Yorkville CrossFit) was smaller, closer and less expensive so I thought I'd try it out.

2.  What's your fitness background?

My fitness background really didn't start until 2009, when I decided I was long overdue to get healthy.  I had tipped the scales at over 300 pounds.  I started slowly at first, walking and crunches, added a little jogging, then I joined a Zumba class and did that for almost two years, until I found CrossFit in April of 2011.

3. Occupation?

Office Manager for a psychiatric practice in Naperville.

4.  Tell us about your family life...

I have three kids, Colton, Jake and Brittany and one granddaughter, Emilee.  Brittany and I live with my boyfriend Rob and his kids, Sydney and Noah.

Everything!! I love the coaches, I love the athlete's, I love hitting PR's and continue to surprise myself every week!

7.  How has CrossFit changed your life?

7.5. What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?

Since I started CrossFit, I have ran three 5K's, I've gained lots of muscle and I continue to lose weight.

8. Future training goals?

I'd love to do some more 5K's and try for a 10K eventually.

I've been eating pretty strict Paleo for the past few weeks.  I usually try to maintain a somewhat Paleo diet.

10.  Favorite cheat meal?

I am going to be blessed with another grandchild in May!! :)

You can honestly do so much more than you think.  Just keep at it.  Set goals and work until you reach them, then set more goals. (Chip away at them).

13. What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?

My favorite exercise...well I can tell you what my least favorite is!!  I think my favorite exercise in a WOD is deadlifts although, CrossFit Poker is my favorite WOD!!

14.  How did you feel after your first workout?

After my very first 5-4-3-2-1, I felt like I was going to pass out! My legs were like rubber after the row and then I had to run 400 meters?!

I feel stronger, have more confidence and love the friends that I have made!

16.  What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?

Don't let the intimidation factor keep you away.  even those of us who have been at it for a long time still get intimidated.  Just do it, go 'all in' and have fun with it!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NOVEMBER AOM, DAN WOODS!

What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit? After running past all of the loud grunting people in Mark & Jeanette’s garage day after day I decided to stop by one day and see what was going on.  Mark filled me in and I thought why not, I’ll give it a try.  As an avid runner, I hoped crossfit would improve my overall fitness.

What's your fitness background?
I run… a lot.

Occupation?I’ve been employed by the City of Aurora for the past 20 years.

Tell us about your family life…I’m married to this hot babe and we have 3 lovely children (most of the time).  We are an active, crazy and loving family (again, most of the time)

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?Well, it used to be Once you accept that it’s possible, you’ll discover you’re capable.   But after reading Mark’s bio and talking to Jeanette about her Son’s favorite quote I think that might become my new life motto   Dig Deep, Rise Up.

What is your favorite part of working out at Yorkville CrossFit?I like the variety.  It’s always something new and it’s always challenging.

How has CrossFit changed your life?
I don’t know that I’ve been coming to CrossFit long enough to proclaim that it’s changed my life but it’s certainly changed my perspective on what CrossFit is really all about and how I can benefit from my efforts there.  It’s rewarding to see the gains that I’ve made in such a short time.

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?I’ve already seen strength gains everywhere.  I feel stronger towards the ends of my long runs than I had in the past.  Over the past month I’ve been running hills faster and harder than I’ve ever been able to before.  I’m also getting pretty ok at doing pull ups.

Future training goals?  I haven’t really given that much thought.  I think I’m still new enough that for the time being I will simply continue to get in better overall shape and continue to learn how to properly balance running and crossfit into my life.

What's your daily nutrition like?
I mostly eat food and drink liquids.  I try to eat on the healthier side but have room for improvement.

Favorite cheat meal?
Cheat?  I never cheat.  Everything in moderation.  I will never turn down a good burger and a fine craft beer.

Tell us something we don't know about you! When I was in grade school I used to wear a mask, made from a paper plate, and would chase girls on the playground as the “Kissing Bandit” Just something to keep in mind if I walk into the box one day with a paper plate on my face.

What have you learned from doing CrossFit?I don’t think I ever had a real appreciation for the importance of back strength, CrossFit has changed that.

What's your favorite exercise to do in a WOD?
Burpees…I know, I know but I like them.

How did you feel after your first workout?  Accomplished but humbled.

How has your life improved since joining Yorkvile CrossFit?It’s improved my running performance and overall strength/fitness.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new? It seems like people I’ve talked to are hung up on the puke bucket.  You don’t have to use it- there’s a bathroom there too.

Congratulations to our Athlete of the a month for September...Jennifer Anderson!!!!!!!
Here is a little Q and A sesh with Jenn!

What was your reason for joining Yorkville CrossFit?

A lot of my friends back home do high intensity training and it has always interested me. But something about going to an actual gym and trying it for the first time was intimidating! I instead decided to do 'fake' high intensity training and signed up for bootcamp. Then one day, the heavens opened up, and Jeanette told me about YCF! I knew with the direction of her and mark, there was no way I could say no!

What's your fitness background?

I have a knee injury that has been holding me back since high school. Before that, I played softball, volleyball, basketball, softball, and was even on the dance team. After my last surgery in 2010, I got pretty complacent and lazy. Last year after gaining some unwanted weight, I started a regular workout routine an attended bootcamp.

Occupation?

Office manager/HR assistant at a Private investigator company

Tell us about your family life...
I married my husband in June of this year! We have a little fur baby, a lab named Cruz who is 5 months old. I have 3 step brothers and a pretty awesome family who I love spending time with and miss now that I've moved!

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?

“When you can’t change the direction of the wind — adjust your sails.”
H. Jackson Brown

What is your favorite part of working out at YCF?

Oh where do I start? The coaches are great! Always encouraging, supportive, and positive! They push you to your limits, but never give you an impossible challenge!
The athletes at YCF are so amazing to workout with! Everyone puts 110% into every workout and it's so great to watch others accomplish a goal or a PR! There is nothing better than a group of people encouraging one another to be their best!

How has YCF changed your life?
For starters, I've never felt better. I'm not the skinniest I've ever been, but I'm definitely the strongest I've ever been! I have to buy a bigger size in jeans and I'm actually excited about it! (I never thought I would say that!) I am officially addicted to it and the kool aid!
And paleo.... Well this is a whole new ball game for me compared to how I used to eat (gross). I battled with hypoglycemia for as long as I can remember- and now that is a thing of the past!

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?

My quads have always been 2 different sizes (because of knee injury) and they are now pretty darn close to the same! That makes me so happy!
I think i gained some muscle, but even if I haven't- I feel more confident and comfortable with my own body than ever before. After struggling with an eating disorder in college- and distorted body image views my whole life- it's a great feeling to be comfortable in my own badass skin ;)

Future training goals?

So many! Pull ups, muscle ups, hand stand push ups, and double unders.

What's your daily nutrition like?

I eat strict Paleo most of the time. Sometimes on Saturday I will over-indulge in beer and pizza. And the occasional glass (or 4) of wine!
My favorite food is eggs. I could eat scrambled eggs and nothing else. And some days, I do :)

Favorite cheat meal?
Pizza and beer!

Tell us something we don't know about you!
Hm.... My maiden name is Babb, and my first tattoo was babbs bunny from tiny toons. (I know, i know...Ridiculous!)
Other than that, I'm a pretty open book!

What have you learned from doing high intensity workouts?
That I like heavy lifts and I still hate cardio! ;) but I enjoy pushing myself to the point of puking and not giving up! It's all mental! And, I've learned that I can do anything for 15-30 minutes.

What's your favorite exercise to do in a workout?

Deadliifts. Love me some deadliifts!

How did you feel after your first workout?

Like I was legitimately going to die. And instantly hooked!

How has your life improved since joining Yorkville CrossFit?

My nutrition has become something I am aware and conscious of, and my energy level has sky rocketed! I don't feel lazy, and now find myself wanting to do more outdoor/physical activities, such as hiking and swimming. My anxiety feels better too, some of those workouts relieve a whole lotta stress!

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying Yorkville CrossFit or someone who is new?

It will change your life in so many wonderful ways. There's no excuse not to take care of the only body you get in this life! And it's never too early or late!

Congratulations to our Athlete of the Month for August, PATTY GIBSON!!!!!
What was your reason for joining YCF?  I joined YCF mainly because I was looking for a place where my daughter, Mallory, would be comfortable working out and would want to go back.....and it's really close to my house :-)

What's your fitness background?  I really don't have one.  I was not athletic in my youth so spent my adulthood trying to find ways to be active and shape up at home.  I have an extensive workout video library!  Barely used.....

Occupation?  Staff Accountant for a Senior Living Community

Tell us about your family life...My husband Jim and I have been married for 19 years this November.  He is a store manager for Discount Tire Co.  We have three children.  Mallory (15) likes to dance, sing, listen to music, play volleyball, and working out, of course.  Our daughter Morgan (13) is the house recluse.  She spends hours upon hours in her room reading and watching you tube videos.  She plays cello and dreams of travelling and learning new languages.  Our son Garrett (10) plays baseball, loves his video games and is very interested in military/weapons history.

What's your favorite quote or words to live by?  'Always look on the bright side of life.'  And my favorite Dr. Phil quote, 'You are what you think you are.'

What is your favorite part of our workouts?  I love the variety.  Every workout is different.  I also love the community and the positive attitude that you get from your fellow athletes.  I also love that everyone is an athlete.  We push each other, encourage each other, coach each other.

How has YCF changed your life?  I am excited about working out again.  I get to share it with my daughter and watch her improve and push herself.  We have something in common, something that we can share and talk about.  And I'm feeling a little competitive.

What are some results or achievements you have accomplished so far?  I've definitely started to see some results.  I am less round than I used to be. :-)  I'm starting to see muscle definition in my arms and legs, my core is so much stronger.  My endurance has improved.  I am not the first one finished usually, but I'm faster than I used to be.  I don't need as much rest time during a workout and I usually have strategy for how I'm going to get my reps done.

What fitness achievement are you most proud of and why?  My most awesome achievement so far has been getting across the monkey bars several times during a workout.  There was a 5 burpee penalty for not getting across the monkey bars and I always just assumed I would be doing the burpees, but I tried and I made it across!  I was so happy and surprised and I did it over and over.  When I first started working out and there were monkey bars, it was during a team workout and someone had to carry me across.....that sucked.

Future training goals?  1. pull up  2. hand stand push up  3.  lower my times on benchmark workouts

What's your daily nutrition like?  For me it's a work in progress.  I have eliminated a lot of processed foods and dairy.  I eat a lot of protein and try to get a good amount of vegetables in each day.  I snack on raw almonds and fruit and berries.  I also dring lots of water.  I eat 'clean' about 70% of the time, but I do indulge in cold beer, pizza, and other not so healthy foods...damn Dr. Pepper.  One of my goals is to prepare more fresh meals ahead of time so I'm less likely to run to Target for dinner or order a pizza.  I know where things fall apart, and I am making small changes to improve my habits and set myself and my family up for success.

Favorite cheat meal?  Pizza and cold beer

Tell us something we don't know about you! I grew up in Texas....so if you hear me say y'all, that should explain it!

What have you learned from high intensity training?  That my weakest muscle is my mind.  A lot of what we do is really about overcoming fear, pushing ourselves to try the heavier weight, jump on the taller box, run a little bit faster.  So many times during an extremely difficult workout I find myself doubting whether or not I can keep going, I can and I do.  And when I'm done I am so happy and proud that I didn't quit, even though I really wanted to.

How has becoming an athlete changed you personally?  It has helped me to realize that I can do anything that I want to do.  If I want something, it's up to me.  I determine my success or failure.  It really makes you examine your own mindset about everything in your life.  I am empowered.

What's your favorite exercise to do in a workout?  My favorite exercise is hang power cleans.  I used to like slam balls until Jeanette paired them in a workout with KBS.

How did you feel after your first workout?  My legs were on fire, I couldn't breathe and I was pretty sure that I was going to pass out.  I was exhausted, but I felt great!  I had never pushed myself to the point of being uncomfortable before.  It was what I was looking for and what I knew I needed.  I couldn't wait to sign up for my next workout.

How has your life improved since joining YCF?  I feel better, I sleep better, I eat better.  I'm more active in general and I get to spend time with my family doing something that I enjoy doing.  Did I just say that I enjoy working out?  And I pay someone to torture me?  What?

What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying YCF or someone who is new?  It is like nothing you've ever done before.  It's never easy, but it gets easier as you get stronger.  And you will get stronger.  When I first started, I would get discouraged because I finished last, I used less weight, I struggled with doing certain movements.  It really pissed me off!  I was so mad at myself.  I kept coming back, though.  My form improved so I could lift more weight.  Then I got faster and I wasn't finishing last anymore.  We all struggle with certain movements and we all HATE certain exercises, but I think that there's no substitute for the feeling I get when I finish a tough workout.  That feeling never goes away.  If you try it and you stick with it, you will never regret it.  Oh, and your first time really is the worst workout that you will do! (Jeanette is not making that up.)
